Vinka was signed by the well known Sony Music Africa in May 2019. one year after, we want to look at what has happened musically. It was all joy and much was expected to come with this deal for Vinka going regional or international.
The year leading up to the signing, Vinka had dominated the airwaves in Uganda. Her music was doing so good that even neighboring Kenya and South Sudan started booking her. In one show in Juba she was showered with dollar bills.
By the beginning of 2019, vinka had replaced not only Sheebah but also Winnie Nwagi as the female artist with most club hits. From Chips Na Ketchup, Mukwano Gwo, to Mapozi and Love Doctor, she dominated the nightlife. Vinka had also promised her fans that through 2019, they would be getting a new song and video every month.
Then Came Sony Music Africa!
The timing was perfect. A trending young female artist signed by the prestigious Sony Music, the sky would be the limit. We were expecting a lot from the partnership.
Fast forward to the end of 2019 and the results aren’t that exciting. One would even argue that Swangz Avenue could have done an equally good job. Nonetheless, Vinka managed to keep her promised of a new song and video every month. Going regional and global, not much. At least not as most of us had expected.
2020 Begins with new hopes
The start of 2020 would come with bigger plans but the COVID-19 pandemic didn’t make things much better either. The entire world of audience based entertainment is on a standstill.
All the regional challenges and aside, Vinka has continued to do so well locally. We have enjoyed some real good songs and videos all through 2019 and the early part of 2020 sofar.
