Oliver Mtukudzi, one of the most loved and respected musicians in Zimbabwe has died at age 66.
He rose to fame in the 1970s for his voice against Zimbabwe’s white-minority rule of the time. Since then, the singer continued to voice his political views through his music.
Tuku and controversies
In 2001, his song Wasakara, which means “You Are Too Old” was banned in Zimbabwe alleging that it was targeted at Robert Mugabe, president of Zimbabwen then. Mugabe was 77 by then.
Oliver Mtukudzi’s music has also been major sensitizing tools for his social messages such as political awareness and messages about HIV/ADIS.
Because of his great skills as guitarist, Tuku mixed several music styles to come up with a with his own style of Afro-Jazz which his fans call the “Tuku Music”
In his 40-year career, Oliver Mtukudzi released 67 albums, tour the world and won over 24 local and regional wards.
Tukus songs popular songs included Todii, Wasakara, Neria, Ndakuvara, Cri Nani, Dzoka Uyamwe, Hear Me Lord, Pindurai Mambo and others.
He died on 23rd January, 2019 at Avenues Clinic in Harare, Zimbabwe.
